Dominical is on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, about 3.5 hours drive from the airport SJO in San Jose. Generally speaking, it's good to find a flight that arrives no later than 1 pm if possible. By the time you go through customs, baggage, car rental and driving, you can count on about 5 hours from arrival time. Arriving by 1 pm theoretically will put you at EOW by dark. It's not really a big deal if you drive after dark, but if you don't know your way around Costa Rica, maybe avoid it at first. The roads are fantastic between the airport and Dominical, and the drive is beautiful. Below are a couple maps and step by step directions from the airport to our place and back. We can send these as a PDF before your trip so you can have a printer friendly version. Use our directions and avoid going into San Jose! If you plan to use the regional airlines to fly in (Nature Air or Sansa), fly into Quepos and we'll arrange transportation to Edge of the World. By bus you can come to Dominical or you can arrange a shuttle from the airport to Dominical (around $45 shared or $150 private). We're happy to help you put that together with reputable, licensed companies.
1. From the airport, follow signs to exit, then turn/exit RIGHT following signs to Liberia and Hwy 1. Merge right (dangerous spot!) onto Hwy 1. Go 7 km (4.4 miles). 2. Go under a bridge and immediately exit RIGHT in a tight turning ramp. At top, turn RIGHT, going over bridge. 3. At traffic circle, take 2nd exit towards Coyol. Go 3.5 km (2.2 miles) 4. At next traffic circle, take 2nd exit towards Atenas. Enter Autopista toll road (Hwy 27). Go 35.5 km (22.1 miles). 5. You’ll pass through three tolls booths. Prices vary from around 400 to 600 colones per toll. You will need colones for the tolls, as they do not accept US cash or credit cards!!! 6. Your exit off the toll road is shortly after the 3rd toll. Exit RIGHT towards “Jaco & Tarcoles” and enter Hwy 34. 7. You will stay on Hwy 34 all the way to Dominical for approx. 141 km (86 miles). Here are some highlights of this stretch of the road, so reset the odometer if you wish: 11 km -- you’ll cross over the Tarcoles river. Great place to get out and see crocs from the bridge in the river below. Keep an eye on your car, it’s pretty common for people to break in cars here. 39.7 km -- a cool overlook of the Pacific and the town of Jaco 100 km -- keep left at the fork in Quepos. A Maxi Pali is on your left (last big grocery store if you want to stock up on anything) 110 km -- a large palm oil processing plant on your right. You may smell it! 9. Okay, so you’ve gone your 141 km and you’re just about in Dominical. Turn left on the San Isidro Hwy, just before a bridge and police checkpoint. Go 3.3 km (2 miles). 10. You’ll be in the small community of Baru. There’s a Soda on the right. Turn LEFT just before crossing over a one lane bridge. This is a hard left up a fairly steep dirt road. Now you start to climb! Go 1.7 km (1 mile). 11. You’ll see a large green gate on your LEFT. This is the entrance to EOW and Finca Lagunas. Our house will be the first driveway on your LEFT, about 3 blocks in. You’re in the jungle!!!
